Try Croatian cuisine!

Being a volunteer which explore new location means not only visiting museums, concerts and other stuff we did, but also trying new tastes of Balkan food.

We were honestly honored to visit 5 restaurants situated in Bakar, Viškovo, Rijeka, Pećine and Kastav.

For me as a vegeterian it was a little competition for myself to find something in menu. But all in all every time I was gladly surprised with my choice. Why? Let's see.

First place we've visited was Bakarska Konoba (Bakar obviosly). It is located in a bay and has a nice view to the whole town surrounded with mountains typical for this terrain. Guess who met us? It was the owner, who also listened to our order. It was a hot midday, and we were hungry... Imagine when we got our dishes which tasted like meal cooked at home. Yeah, that was amazing beginning of our kinda 'gastro-tour'.

Second place was Konoba Maretina in Viškovo. Even waiter didn't know English well, he did his best. By the way, two words about meal dose: whenever you go, you will get a really big-big portion. I was a bit critical thinking about grilled vegetables I've got but trust me - that was enough to overeat! And second thing - taste. Really delicious, real jam. If you way will pass through Viškovo, so please pay attention and go to this lovely ribarnica.

Third place was hidden far from but stop. But we was fighting to find out where is Lovorka (Rijeka) restaurant and we did it! Unusual location with friendly and calm atmophere. This restaurant is known as a good place to try grill and meat but my choice fell on njoki. Yes, Wiki says that it's an Italian dish, but it also mention that njoki are popular in Croatia as well. And I was not disappointed with my selection. Add local bread with soft cheese as a paste, and fresh salad... Totally yummy!

So fourth place - Konoba Borik - is situated in Pećine, Rijeka and I find it especially cosy and romantic. I even can imagine coulpes sitting here in the evening, drinking vine or coffee, chatting and looking at the sea because the view from this place is fascinating... Friendly, smiling staff and this savoury food! Just take a look on this photos, and I believe you agree with me that this place worth to spend some money and time.

The last restaurant is located in old town of Kastav and named Ostarija Fortica. Even being situated in 14-15 km from Rijeka, it is still very much great spot to pick. Just go to Tripadvisor and check feedbacks. What can you see? Satisfied comments. Just come there and enjoy not only ambience of ancient part of town with its aura but with pleasant lunch from chef who knows his job.

Am I always writing in a positive way? So yes, and I'll gladly do it more and more because I'm fully satisfied with both service and food. And what can I say as a conclusion? I LOOOVE Croatia kitchen!
